The Three amigos
OpenDomain is the brain child of three friends that have worked together on multiple innovative projects for years
- Cedric Johnson
A mild-mannered software consultant by day, a fierce Open Source contributor by night – fighting for justice and freedom (of domains). Creator of one the first true media computers – the first set-top box PVR that could record TV shows and access the internet at the same time. Please see more at http://www.free.tv/ - Mark Dragan
Inventor of metadata schema and semantic tagging well before the web or xml existed. Continues to surprise and delight with his ability to envision and forcast major trends and innovative win-win scenarios. A leading authority in cross-cultural process integration, he shepards clients into their futures through next-generation published works, technical evangelism, workshops, hands-on process analysis, and executive coaching. His personal webpage with selected “skunk-works” projects can be found at http://www.omnicord.com/ - “Chaz” Aldo
A true rocket scientist – graduated with honors in a Masters degree in Aerospace engineering. Manages the network infrastructure of a large Colorado-based telecom - including virtual servers, VOIP, network design, SAN administration, and security implementation. His favorite place to play is http://www.DamnCoolToys.com/

We have received quite alot of questions lately, also at http://drupal.org/node/44799 and I would like to clear the air. First of all - thank you for all the feedback and interest in OpenDomain! We are very excited about growing ‘Open Source for Domains ‘. If you have asked to use a domain recently, please be patient for your response - we are very busy! Also, make sure to follow the instructions VERY carefully - we use it as a litmus test to make sure you can follow instructions. Let me address your comments:
- When a user actively develops a domain, we never ‘yank’ it back. They can use it as long as they follow the terms. And if you make an honest mistake, we work with you to correct it.
- A LOT of people do not ‘get’ OpenDomain Yes, anyone may buy a domain for under $10 at RegisterFly.com but can you get the domain you want? Something easily remembered and related to what you are developing? There are many good domains out there. Unfortunately, most of the good ones are taken. We are the anti-squatters - we buy the domains so YOU can use them for FREE!
- There is no angle This not for profit. Yes, some of these domains cost quite a lot, and no, I am not rich.
- We request no adult content, but we do have some domains that are questionable. Some of these were donated, some are actually related to good projects, and some were purchased to prevent phishers from using them
- There are many ways to contribute to Open Source. I work by day as a Microsoft consultant, but most good Open projects are not targeted for that platform. So what I do is I use my time to earn moeny so I can buy domains that I give to Open groups. In effect I contribute as much as a linux hacker adding new driver code.
- I have never sold any domain.
- Linking
- We do request that users link back to OpenDomain, so we can get exposure to help other people understand what we are doing.
- This is not to increase search rank - not alot of people search for our key terms.
- We ask for links to use nofollow because some OpenDomain users were questionable in their linking policy
I love opendomain! What a great project
I found you through the first issue of “Good”…I’m pretty impressed… looking forward to following your idea.
Hello,
I found you by entering http://www.c-i.org, which would be a great added link site for our organization. The formal name of our organization is the Citizens’ Public Policy Institute, but we want to be known simply as the “Citizens Institute”.
We received 501 C3 charitable educational organization status from the IRS. Our mission is “to Educate and Empower Citizens”. We are STRICTLY non-partisan (trans-partisan, post-partisan?).
Our primary activity will be to formulate “Citizen Resolutions” that have near-concensus support. The Resolutions can then provide a guide or “morla compass” to our elected representatives. The Citizens Institute itself does not take a position on any Resolution…the entire process is Citizen driven.
So, we would like to be able to use http://www.c-i.org.
I will try to figure out how to do this via your site. However, we also have a serious need for help in developing our website, database, etc. I would greatly appreciate it if anyone there could provide any ideas about where we can find people capable of realizing our vision.
Thanks in advance.

Hi - I am about to launch webki.com.au and wondered if I could have webki.com. redirect to this site. ….at least temporarily.
The idea would be to have the US version up next year.
Please let me know if there are any options we could explore! I had tried to purchase this site but it was already taken….by you guys!!
Best regards, Gayle
For an “about” page, this does a poor job of explaining what exactly opendomain is.
Hi I am trying to find a domain for my website, the site is based on the game called counter strike and would be a clan base for CSYT (counter strike young team). As there will be many members our team really need a new domain.
Thanks alot,
Grant
How can i register a free .org Domain ? Help
Is this project is supporting Free Domain names or lowCost domain names
I wrote you last Fall about using http://www.c-i.org for Citizens Institute. We are in the process of changing our web service, so my email address has changed and our site is temporarily off line.
However, when we come back up (better than before), we want to be able to use the http://www.c-i.org domain as it is so much easier to use and remember than http://www.citizens-institute.org.
Please give me an update at this new email address and, if possible, hold the domain name for us.
Thanks in advance.

This seems like a good project for a really good cause, keep it up!
What is your criteria for letting people use your domain? Looks like a lot of people are just waiting in vain??
Hey,
If we do land up making a profit off our website, how do we provide donations back to you? I love your idea, it gives me a start-up domain, but I don’t want to ‘bum’ off you forever: I do feel as though you need renumeration.
Cheers,
Jonathan Dickinson
Love this site! I just wish you would fix your contact form so I can finally get syndi.com! (The CAPTCHA thing is busted, no code shows.)
Good FAQ. Still not sure how I’d feel about using one of these domains if I was running such a project, but good on you for making them available to the right people and not just hocking them off to the highest bidder. One small thing: Registerfly have the worst commercial reputation on the planet and you should probably link to some other registrar as an example of where people can get cheap domains in light of what transpired in 2006/2007.
See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RegisterFly
hello it is test. WinRAR provides the full RAR and ZIP file support, can decompress CAB, GZIP, ACE and other archive formats.

I love this idea of Open Sources Domain.
I always wonder why there many Linux distribution and software for free and we can’t find the some thing for domains names.
Thanks for this great work, i hope one day i hear about a domain name under the GNU General Public License!
